MTV News' James Montgomery picks his top 25 records of the year. By James Montgomery Bigger Than The Sound's Best Albums of 2009 Photo: MTV News Well, we made it. 2009 is practically in the books, and now it's time to look back on the rather, uh, zany year that was. Last week, I published my list of the year's Best Songs , and now, it's time for the albums. It's a fairly lengthy list, because, like I wrote in my songs column, ...

This band crept up on me recently (thanks in part to the music blog i guess i'm floating ). Regardless of when I found them, I really like Aderbat a lot. They remind me a bit of Sunny Day Real Estate, with hints of Josh Rouse circa Home . Their LP, We Belong to the Sea , starts with a very Figurines-ish ballad, and keeps us in their grips with tinny percussion, intentionally feeble vocals, and bittersweet melodies. These lists can get grating, and they can also get to be a little redundant, especially when they all pile up in the last few weeks of the year and tend to feature a lot of ...

BOB’S FAVORITE ALBUMS OF 2009 Thanks to a couple of good libraries in the area, I was actually able to hear quite a few albums released in 2009 (wonder how long it’ll be before the record companies crack down on that?). I don’t think I quite hit triple digits, but I came close. In the end, only a small portion of what I heard ended up being purchased for my permanent collection. That’s essentially what you’ll find on this list, although ...

n 2009 I had a certain milestone birthday, the number of which I don't wish to discuss here. So it's no wonder that I felt more disconnected from what's going on in pop music than ever before. I mean, it is me just getting old and out of touch, right? It couldn't be that new music nowadays just sucks... could it? Then again, the two most popular recording artists of the year were Michael Jackson and the Beatles, so maybe I'm not missing that ...
