Soma' was the name of a fictional hallucinogenic drug in Aldous Huxley's futuristic novel Brave New World that was used by the government to pacify the population. In an example of life imitating art, the Japanese have been considering adding lithium to their water supply to prevent suicide. (And you thought it was outrageous when governments added fluoride to the water to prevent tooth decay!)
