Looking back on this year's book count -- which I plan to post about on New Year's Eve night, I would say that Poppy Z Brite is the author I have read the most this year (though she is possibly in 2nd place to Stephen King, we shall see). I owe that to oddmonster , who was shocked to hear that I'd never read any of her books before, and was quick to recommend the three-book 'Liquor' series as well as anything else she has written. And so, ...

Here is where I stand with the challenges that end this month: I am ending this challenge with only 1 of the 3 books read. I completed, and really enjoyed, The Color Purple. However I had to abandon The Road-- I had a really difficult time with the writing style, but I will come back and try this book again later on. So I'm ending this challenge 1/3. Over the past ...

It's vacation time, so the blog will be quiet from now until after New Years. Time to rejuvinate, play with my family (a trip to the snow!) and having some nice time curling up with a book! So what to bring? Teen reading: I'm working with middle school students this year, so I've been trying to do more reading of books that will hook teens. I'm almost finished with The Rock and The River , by Kekla Magoon. It's fantastic, and drew me ...

Crisis brings out the best in some people, or so it is said. It certainly produced some excellent books this year. What follows is my list of six for 2009, books that I found informative and enjoyable this year. Three of the books cover aspects of financial history, including one on the greatest capitalists ever and two on the era that led to the Great Depression . The other three deal with how economics went astray. It is not necessarily ...

SURE, Dan Brown and Sarah Palin are topping the best-seller charts, but the breakout of the holiday book-buying season just may have been an elaborate, richly illustrated tome that records the dreams and spiritual questing of an author who has been dead for nearly half a century. The list price for this 9-pound, 416-page volume? $195. William P. O'Donnell/The New York Times Jung's original ornate calligraphy and tempera ...
