The number of illegal immigrants in the United States declined to 10.8 million in January 2009, a drop of one million since a peak in 2007, according to an estimate Tuesday by the Department of Homeland Security . Demographers said the figures, based on census data and the most recent estimate by the department, showed the largest two-year drop in the population of illegal immigrants since 1990, after which it began a period of rapid growth. ...
