Books I Read in 2009
3 hours ago ago from Work Product
In the spirit of year-end lists, and for my own future reference, here are the books I read for the first time this year. Most of them, anyway I didn't keep a running list and my memory is imperfect. Also: Just primary literature, no scholarship (too many, too complicated, too fragmented). John Barth, Giles Goat-Boy Mark Z. Danielewski, House of Leaves Junot D az, Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao Dave Eggers, What Is the What? Jonathan ...

Right, books published in 2009 that I am most likely to remember/think about/return to. It's probably obvious from this list that pretty much everything I read this year was YA and/or SFF. That is, when I wasn't reading school stories for the thesis. In no particular order: Tender Morsels by Margo Lanagan . When I talked about this book a few months ago , I was speaking more about the book's reception than the work itself. In case it ...

As i am a bit of a book-nut, about 2 years ago iI created a list of all the books I own, and marked next to each one whether I had read it, started it or if it's a reference book. At the time there were about 600 or so books on the list, including some duplicates. As of today there are 757 in my collection (and sure to grown over birthday and Christmas season ) I also discovered that while owning all these books, i haven't actually ...

Fed President Ben Bernanke has been named Time magazine's Person of the Year for 2009. However, in looking back at former People of the Year it becomes crystal clear that this title doesn't necessarily mean that the honored person has done something good for the world It only meant that he or she had made a big influence on the course of history during the preceding year. Some have brought us blessings, while others have brought plagues. ...

I don't know, erm... maybe? Actually the real answer is 'more than likely' as several of these titles were ones that I was eagerly anticipating but somehow never got round to reading (for a number of reasons). I read as many books as I can but I can't read 'em all. 2009 was definitely a year where the perils of commuting to work meant that some of the larger books were left at home... Larry did this first , Joe did it a couple of days ago . ...

While it's traditional for critics to assemble lists of the best and worst films of the year, for some reason, I'm a lot more worked up about my list of the worst films. Maybe it's because there are so many of them that represent everything that's wrong with movies today. But let's start with my list of the 10 best films of 2009: 1. Up in the Air 2. The Hurt Locker 3. A Serious Man 4. Precious 5. Up 6. Avatar 7. In the Loop ...

True to my customary seasonal procrastination, I am now forced to once again participate in the American tradition known as last-minute shopping. Last year, I got for then President-elect Barack Obama, Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities". My thinking was, it may be the best of times for Obama, but it was mostly likely the worst of times for a number of Americans. This year, I've decided to pre-order for the president Robert Caro's ...
